Wisdom teeth

Adults have up to 32 teeth of which four are wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are the last to come through the gum, they usually appear between the ages 17-25.

Sometimes wisdom teeth can cause problems if there is not enough room in the mouth as the wisdom tooth erupts at an angle and gets stuck against the tooth in front (impacted).

The dentist will assess how to proceed with treatment. Xrays will help determine if there is enough room for the tooth to come through (erupt) or how easy or difficult it will be to remove the tooth. The dentist will determine whether the tooth should be taken out at the Dental Practice or by a Specialist Oral Surgeon.
